The purpose of this training is to help increase awareness of
mental health crises and build confidence, so that learners will be able to
support individuals who are experiencing them. Also, know where to signpost
individuals for appropriate professional help.
The overall aims of the training will be to:
Ø Develop knowledge of mental
health crises
Ø Raise awareness of how a mental health crisis might
be experienced
Ø Develop an understanding of how to recognise a
mental health crisis
Ø Build confidence and the skills to support someone
in a mental health crisis
Ø Create a mental health crisis sign posting tool kit
Ø Recognise the importance of self-care
Format
· This is a half day course delivered in person with two facilitators.
· Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities
· We limit numbers to 20 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn
Session Outline
• Identify what a mental health crisis is and how to recognise it.
• Identify what the potential risk factors are (our own safety, the individuals, and others) and how to manage the risks.
• Explore a range of techniques to support, calm and reassure someone who is in crisis.
• Identify the key communication skills
• Identify a range of further professional/ non-professional support and next steps to build a resource toolkit.
• Recognise the importance of self-care and begin to create a personal self-care toolkit.
