Course Summary:
This session will
cover review the role that skeletal muscle mass has for overall health, the
detrimental effect muscle lost has in different patient groups and why
maintaining/rebuilding muscle mass can improve outcomes in patients living with
a long-term health condition. We will also discuss nutritional interventions
which can support the patient in maintaining muscle and strength.

Professor Phillip Atherton was awarded a PhD in 2005 about skeletal muscle
molecular signalling networks. In 2012 he was promoted to Associate Professor
at the University of Nottingham and then to Professor in 2017. He has an active
research interest in how to mitigate musculoskeletal declines in aging and
disease(s). He is widely published and a senior editor for a number of
physiological and nutritional journals.
It is
expected that you will attend the session virtually from a quiet location at
which you will not be disturbed, and you will have access to a microphone and
camera on your device. Every delegate
must have their own device to use throughout this session. This is a requirement for attending this
interactive course.
